About SCHHS

The Saline County History and Heritage Society, Inc. was formed in 1986 with the objective of preserving the history of Saline County, Arkansas and her families. At the time of the founding of the SCHHS, there was virtually nothing in print on Saline County, although the county is one of the oldest in the state, having been formed from Pulaski County in 1835 – even before Arkansas became a state in 1836.

Saline County is one of the small number of counties with county records virtually intact; there have been no courthouse fires, although losses of records have occurred over the years through neglect. Transcripts and abstracts of many of these records have been published by the SCHHS over the years (see The Bookstore link above), both individually and for the benefit of SCHHS, and more are being compiled every day.

I have been trying to Get a couple of Pictures from 1966-1967 it may be 1968 also (I was in the 3rd and 4th Grades; Mrs. Hampton, Mrs. Nickles my Teachers). Pictures were of 2 Plays done at Eastside Elementary School (aka: Angie Grant Elementary). “The Buttercups in one Play. Snow White in another Play” orchestrated by Ms. Helen, the Music Teacher at the time. She was in a Miss U.S.A. Pageant once. Ernest German, Schools photographer. I’m age 62 now, would like my Adult Daughters to Have the pictures, “as there are None of Me” when I was a Child bt for the Elementary School, I attended. My Daughters’ would Love to See “What their Mother Looked like age 8, 9”. I’ve Never been able to Show Them! If Any can Help at all, I’d appreciate it. I use to be “Laura Lea Sherrill”. Hello,

I am a hobbyist golf course researcher focusing on the golf courses of William Langford and Theodore Moreau who were based in Chicago and active in designing and building golf courses mainly in the 1920s and 1930s. I have found information to suggest that they were involved in designing and building an 18-golf course south of Little Rock, near East End, for the Little Rock Al Amin Temple or Scimitar Shrine organization in 1926 to 1927. Unfortunately the Great Depression caused financial troubles and the property was sold in 1937 and the golf course was soon neglected, eventually being completely overgrown by 1960. The property is currently the site of the Marylake Monastery of Discalced Carmelites.

I am attempting to compile as much historical information about Langford & Moreau to help preserve their history, and to promote awareness and appreciation of their work. I have found a 1943 aerial photo of the golf course and it appears to be an excellent example of their design and construction style. I have also learned that it hosted the 1930 Arkansas State Women’s Amateur Golf Championship.

I am trying to find more information about this golf course, ideally to definitively connect it to Langford & Moreau. I was hoping that your historical society might have some information about the golf course, such as drawings, maps, plans, photos, or other records.

Thank you for any assistance you are able to provide!

Best regards,
John Griffin
